Fly Fishing the Flats and Backcountry of Islamorada
Have you ever wondered what the ultimate rush is in fly fishing? My guess would have to be watching an enormous fish such as a Tarpon gulp your fly within a few feet of the boat on Islamorada‘s very special “yellow brick road“. Maybe it is a super smart Bonefish that after carefully examining your fly, decides to eat it and you watch his tail twitch just a micro-second before the water blows up and he takes off like a rocket. Do massiveSharks make your heart pound, as they patrol a chum slick, inhale your fly and then with brute force destroy even the toughest anglers and their gear.
All of the above can happen in the world famous, Islamorada. All you need to bring is your “A” game and a nod from the fish gods.
If the Backcountry is your pleasure, how about super shallow poling for tailing Redfish and the ever so sneaky Snook. Seatrout, Jacks, Ladyfish etc. are usually plentiful targets for the first time or beginner fly angler, giving them a chance to actually catch a fish on fly and learn all the proper techniques of casting and fighting a fish along the way.
Fly fishing is an ever growing sport worldwide and becoming increasingly popular in the saltwater arena. The difference between freshwater and saltwater fly fishing is like night and day. There is no drifting, no strike indicators, no mending, and most important, no easy fish to catch for just showing up. Anglers must be able to use tackle between 8 and 12 weight, cast great distances(30 to 80 feet), be very quick and accurate inside of 50 feet, able to cast in the wind (and yes, when you are here the wind will be here too) and do all this while standing on a small platform the size of a bed pillow. Sound impossible? Not at all, just business as usual in the Florida Keys.
Before you commit to coming down and fishing with a guide, go to a local fly shop and take a lesson, You should learn the double haul casting technique, strip strike, and line management before you set foot on the boat. Practice, practice, practice every chance you get.
Here at Florida Keys Fun Fishing, all of our guides fly fish. We live it, love it and can teach it. Smiles, patience, and all top quality fly gear and flies included. There is a reason why it is the ultimate rush in fishing!!!
